Private Piano Lessons via the Internet

NEW!  I now offer one-on-one piano lessons over the internet using video conferencing services (such as Skype).  This is a great option for students who move frequently or who like my teaching approach but live far away.  As always, lessons are individually tailored to your musical goals -- whether they be to improve your music reading skills, receive coaching on some new pieces, or learn music theory.

Check out this article from the NY times about the increasing popularity of live piano lessons online being offered by piano teachers to students across the globe!

Please contact me today via the form below and tell me about your musical goals!

                                        Equipment

For lessons over the internet, I use my MacBook Pro, its internal camera, and a Zoom H2 external microphone (to help improve audio quality).  I place my laptop on a sturdy music stand and position it towards my piano so the student can see the keys when I demonstrate something on the piano.

                                        What equipment will I need?
                                        1. A computer with internet.  High quality broadband internet is generally best for video conferencing.
                                        2. A webcam.  Most laptops come with built-in webcams nowadays, but if you don't have one, you can purchase one for $30-70.
                                        3. An online video conferencing service.  Examples: Skype (free download HERE), Google Talk (requires a free google account -- all you have to do is install a free video chat plugin), or Oovoo (similar to Skype; free download HERE).
There are a few ways to improve audio and video quality, if you desire over time.  To improve the audio quality of what you hear, try using a pair of external speakers in your computer.  Upgrading to an external microphone will allow me to hear you better.  To improve video quality, a higher quality webcam will improve video quality.

                                        FAQ

Are online lessons as effective as in-person lessons?

Although Skype may not necessarily be the most ideal choice for young beginners, it is definitely suitable for most beginners (especially adults) as well as students of all ages who have had lessons before.  It all depends on the willingness of both parties to make it work!  Students can easily adjust to learning to copy from the teachers demonstrations over Skype.  What do you have to lose?  Why not try a free sample lesson, and allow yourself to evaluate the effectiveness of one-on-one lessons online.

What are the rates for online lessons?
I charge the same rates for online lessons as I do for in-person lessons in my studio.  Tuition can be paid online via credit card, debit card, or Paypal (click here).  Please contact me using the form below to inquire about the current rates.  I'd love to hear from you and learn about your musical goals!

What support do you offer students outside of the online piano lessons?
Students are welcome to join the studio facebook page, where students can interact and be inspired by music quotes and videos of famous pianists.  In addition, I always encourage students to email me during the week if they have questions on their pieces or practicing in general.

Who is the typical online piano student?
If you are in one or more of these situations, online lessons may be a good solution for you:
                                        • Moves frequently.
                                        • Lives in a remote area where there aren't many piano teachers.
                                        • Travels frequently.
                                        • Is an adult student but lives in an area that lacks teachers who are open to teaching adults.
                                        • Has visited my blog or heard my playing, and likes my approach.

                                        How do we get started?
Start by sending me an email using the form below!  Please tell me about your musical goals, your instrument, and your location (for scheduling feasibility), and I'll respond to you about setting up a trial lesson/consultation (free of charge).  Assuming the audio/video check out and it seems like a good student-teacher fit, we will schedule our first lesson.
